Ethernet to PS3, should I do it? Yes, but how.

Postby Wonderland on Tue May 11, 2010 5:10 pm

So, my wireless modem is connected to my pc in my room, which is only about 50 feet and a few rooms away from the PS3 room. However, I get a mostly crappy connection and on top of that it'll disconnect way too often to allow any sustained online gaming.

I want to know how I can make a wired connection to the PS3 without having to draw a long ass ethernet cable from my room to the PS3, making a big, impractical, mess. Is there some kind of... something that can be connected via a coaxial cable to the cable output thingy that exists by the PS3? Some kind of... secondary modem or whatnot? Just an access point to allow for a hard wired connection.

I don't quite know if all that made sense, but I'm hoping I can get some help on this. I needs me some steady PS3 internuts.

Using a second modem would probably cost extra depending on your ISP. I would try something like this perhaps.

EDIT: Or these sort of things.

Oo, very interesting. It's sort of what I had in mind, except it still depends on a wireless signal instead of allowing an access point for an actual ethernet cable.

Except, now I'm worried that this might not be a signal issue. Even when my Connection Strength on the PS3 shows to be around the 70% range, I have lag-free gaming... but the drop-offs still happen. And from a little bit of onlineing, I saw that some people actually have that kind of drop-off with a wired connection. I don't know what the deal is, but I'm afraid of dropping the cash for something and then still having the same issues.

And from what I've seen, there haven't been any concrete solutions for this disconnect issue. It's killing me over here.

Thanks for the links though, I may still end up checking something like those out.

Do you have a wireless MODEM or ROUTER/Switch?

If router/switch, do you have the ports forwarded for PSN?

Wireless modem. I've forwarded the ports for it anyway.

Move the PS3 to the DMZ of the router. Port forwarding doesn't always fix drop-offs.

I just feel like there HAS to be a way to use my 2nd modem as a wired access point behind the tv. I've been messing with it for a while now, and I end up with the DNS error. It's... so.... close..... I just can't get the final piece of the puzzle. :(

I just saw this thread now. I'm not sure how helpful this is but I figured I'd share it.

Tonight is the first night I used my PS3 and I noticed I got dropped from the PSN network 3 times. However, I didn't have one of my usual outages (odd in itself since I've gone over 24 hours without one). My net was fine and I was able to pop back onto PSN but for some reason I got randomly dropped off (with an error message/code) about 3 times tonight. Two of those times being about five minutes after I turned the system on. I'm using a wireless router for the PS3 as well - same as I do for the Wii but I haven't had that issue with the Wii. Or with my comp that's also wireless with the router.

Can you set the ip address/subnet/gateway/dns servers manually on the modem?

If so, get all that information from the other modem, let the 2nd modem grab an IP address. Connect something to the 2nd modem, grab the gateway of the device you connected (this is your 2nd modem's IP Address). Then input all the information from the first modem into the 2nd one, replacing IP with the gateway you got from the device.

I guess this might work. I think most ISP's lock down any other MAC Addresses receiving an IP Address from their main servers for each residential address.

EDIT: This is also assuming you're only getting a DNS error because its not getting the DNS info correctly...if it's not getting a unique IP Address somewhere in the process...then this doesn't work.

Quick question for those getting their wireless dropped. How old are your modems? Are we talking b/g or n? If your ps3 detects multiple networks and/or you're still on an older setup like b then maybe it's time to try an upgrade to n or n+. If it doesn't help you can just return it but it might be worth a shot.

I don't know if the newly installed modem here is b/g or n, but it being new and dealing with my 25mbps connection, I don't figure it should be too shabby a piece of product..... though it might be, who knows.

Anyway, I ended up ordering a powerline ethernet adapter kit from Newegg after doing a bunch of reading on it. It's actually exactly what I was looking for, except instead of plugging into the cable outlet with a coaxial cable, it just plugs right into the power... line. Plug one near the modem to hook up with an ethernet cable, and the other next to the PS3 and make that a wired connection as well. Too sweet.

Here's the one I got incidentally.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181122

Basically, a super low price considering the rebate and the fact that other brands have comparable prices for 85mbps, whereas this one is the full 200.

Here are a few questions (I really don't know this stuff, which is why I ask):

What determines connection speed? Is it the modem/router being used or the ISP?
If I get a different modem than the one issued by the ISP, will I still be able to connect?

I get the feeling that my DSL connection is being retarded and could be better.
The the thing is, I would like to up the speed without changing services if at all possible.

My modem is in a box somewhere, i'm using a 3rd party modem/router combo simply because the old ass modem is wired and this is wireless. I can't say how it performs on PSN lately because I haven't logged in but I rarely had an issue with it before.

If you're able to have 25mbps and you try and cram that all through a b connection that could be an issue. Bottlenecks, ya know? N+ is designed for more modern applications and data-hog applications like online gaming and HD streaming and shit. There is a difference.

That's about where mine is, although at last test my download was a bit lower and my upload was a bit higher.

I'd run a test now, but I'm at work, so that would be useless.

WOO! The timing could not have been better for the arrival of these powerline adapters (with regards to RDR tonight), and they work like a charm. I now have a wired connection to my PS3 and there should be no more worries about dropping off and all that crap. The PS3 connection itself is just under 20mbps with the same speed test through it's browser, so it's all gravy baby.
